Ko Mitchell Hughes Taku ingoa.

My affiliated tribes are Ngati Maniapoto and Te Atiawa,

My name is Mitchell Hughes

I am an artist/carver and Tattooist specialising in Taonga Maori with traditional and contemporary influences.

My Background in the arts stems back to my secondary school years where I found an interest in the art of Maori carving and design.

Furthering my knowledge I went on to study a 3 year diploma and a further 2 year bachelor’s degree under the tuition of some of Aotearoa's renowned tohunga whakairo (master carvers) at Te Wananga o Aotearoa.

During that time I was involved in numerous contracts and local community initiatives.

I draw a lot of my inspiration from natural and man-made forms and the prototypes left by my tupuna (ancestors).

I am currently self-employed managing a Maori Tattoo and Carving business for 7years now, with clients travelling from all over New Zealand and internationally for custom Taa Moko and artwork.

I am passionate about my Maori heritage and try to convey this in my art forms (carving and taa moko/tattoo)

This is an opportunity to showcase some Maori art and give remembrance of our Ancestors who have left behind a Legacy for us all to follow and strive for.

"Hē Mahi na o Tatou Tupuna hei pupuri mo a Tatou Uri whakatupu"

"A craft of our ancestors, to keep for coming Generations"

So if you would like to showcase some of your art work I have organised space at the Red Shed (the old Angora Rabbit shed on the way to Waitomo).?
